I was talking to my friend Brandon the other day about things to post about and ways for people to be continually interested in what I’m posting about and he brought up how people will draw “a monster a day” or “a robot a day”. I’ve tried that in the past with my Daily Ink, but I fell off doing it for some reason. Most likely laziness. So because of my past failures I mildly dismissed the idea even though I knew it was a great idea. I just wasn’t sure if I could keep up with it. With the last post I wrote, I’m sure some of you were wondering what I meant by making a custom brush in Illustrator. Custom brushes are one of the most useful tools in Illustrator. They can allow you to quickly create some great effects that would otherwise take you hours to recreate manually. They’re also reusable. So here’s the first post on my new illustration blog…finally. I figured that doing a little process post would be more interesting than a plain old “hello world” type post.
I also figured that doing it on an illustration I had already planned on doing for the site would kill two birds with one stone.
Even though I work in Adobe Illustrator for the most part I still always start with the ‘ol pencil and paper. I also frequently sketch with a ballpoint pen, but that’s another blog post. I almost always go through about 20 thumbnails before I get something I like. I tend to draw so small initially that you can really call them thumbnails. Read More »
